High-Rate (130-Mb/s) Ka-Band Downlink Modulator Breadboard for the Advanced Deep Space Transponder

چکیده
A 32-GHz (Ka-band) breadboard has been developed to demonstrate M -ary phase-shift keyed (PSK) and M -ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) Ka-band modulations using a ×3 8-GHz (X-band) architecture. This breadboard consists of an X-band vector modulator that is driven by a field programmable gate array. The signal is mixed with an upconverted 24-GHz signal to give the Ka-band modulated output. Data rates from 650 kb/s to 130 Mb/s have been demonstrated with quadrature PSK (QPSK) and 16-QAM modulation formats.

Performance of a Ka-Band Transponder Breadboard for Deep-Space Applications
This article summarizes the design concepts applied in the development of an advanced Ka-band (34.4 GHz/32 GHz) transponder breadboard for the next generation of space communications systems applications. The selected architecture upgrades the X-band (7.2 GHz/8.4 GHz) deep-space transponder (DST) to provide Ka-band up/Kaand X-band down capability. In addition, it can also be configured to provi...

In August of 2005, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) was launched. Its mission is to orbit Mars, performing remote sensing of the planet. Its mission will either introduce new, or greatly expand upon, deep space telecommunication capabilities. To support the MRO requirements, there have been multiple changes implemented in NASA's Deep Space Network. These changes include the first deep spac...

Since the designation in the 1970’s of a military satellite communications Ku-band (30-31 GHz uplink, 20.2-21.2 GHz downlink), these frequencies have held great potential to support U.S. forces and requirements. In 1995, the Ku band was chosen for the Global Broadcast Service (GBSJ which will be operational on the UFO satellites beginning in 1998. However, only a small percentage of the allocat...

The Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft, launched on November 7, 1996, carries an experimental space-to-ground telecommunications link at 32 GHz (Ka-band) along with the primary 8.4-GHz (X-band) downlink used for operational MGS project activities. The signals are simultaneously transmitted from a 1.5-m-diameter parabolic antenna on MGS and received by 34-meter beamwaveguide (BWG) antennas lo...
